Back in march, i stepped out and offered a specialized form of mini-session portraits that i had never done before : portraits of mamas with their nurslings. knowing how special and how fleeting a breastfeeding relationship is, i figured maybe other mamas would want it documented the way that i do! so, i partnered with midwife Sara at Cedar Tree Birth and Wellness, and we hosted this lovely event for 14 pairs of mamas and babies. it was so special.
so we did it again, of course! this time around, a couple things were different. like, the room we used last time, which previously had a couch in it, was now filled with a gorgeous, inviting bed, giving the mamas the opportunity to recline or side-lie while nursing, or to sit in a rocking chair in that same private room. meanwhile, in the main rooms, women lingered, nursing their babies and chatting about motherhood and birth. there was so much lingering this time! all these women, who had never met before, all hit it off. for me, that was really rewarding to see, as i had hopes that this photo event would also invite a sense of community and support.
so, without further ado, here's an image from each nursing pair who came out this past weekend. beauty upon beauty.

winter skies
This has been such a good year so far. I'm so delighted and proud to be doing all the variety of work I've been doing this year. It feels like we're finding the sweet spot 'round here, falling into the sorts of work that fit me the best and that also offer to others services that are truly wanted.
SO, here are a few upcoming event dates for Spring 2014!
all event tickets are sold as first come, first serve and all require deposits or full payment to reserve your spot. tickets will be sold on my website under the "SHOP" tab.
keep an eye on my Facebook page (click on the "get notifications" option under the "Liked" menu at the top of this page) and/or this blog in order to find out when tickets go on sale.
of course, in addition to all these events, i'm still available for Family Photojournalism sessions, Birth Photography, and Fresh48 sessions.
just before Christmas, i announced that i'd be teaching my first ever photography workshop. it was a workshop that would teach women how to use their DSLR cameras to their full potential, but also would include conversation and tips about family photojournalism, telling stories with our cameras. and all of this would unfold in my cozy living room around the wood stove with old quilts over our laps. we'd share meals together and root the techy talk in the beautiful messes of our daily lives. it was a beautiful dream in my heart.
and within 12 hours it sold out. so i made a second group. 12 hours and that one was also sold out. that's when i knew i'd hit a chord. my excitement grew.

yesterday, the first group went through the workshop. they were my brave and good natured guinea pigs. and they were wonderful.
and the day was such a dream. we waded through all the technical information about exposure and metering and focal points and depth of field and ISO and all the rest, and as we did, light bulbs were going off over every head. which, i have to say, is THE most gratifying thing to observe whenever you're trying to teach something to someone else. we wandered around and practiced making images in manual mode, looking for beautiful light as we did. we trouble-shooted and gave feedback on one another's images. we talked about the beauty our lives contain and how to tell the story of our lives using our vision combined with our technical savvy. and so much more.
the second group meets this upcoming weekend and i'm really ready to go at it again.
